What is hypnotherapy?
It is an altered state of consciousness that is characterized by a pleasant state of relaxation. While being in this relaxed state, ones awareness and concentration are increased. Hypnosis is not sleep. The conscious mind is aware of what one is experiencing. Most people enter hypnotic or trance states several times throughout the day when they are absorbed in an experience. Some examples include watching a movie and being undistracted by outside sounds or driving in one’s car and arriving at one’s destination without having noticed how they arrived.
What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a state of consciousness where the mind is deeply relaxed, opened, and are receptive to new suggestions. The hypnotist provides suggestions to the unconscious mind to fix the current problem while bypassing and ignoring the conscious mind. However, these hypnotically suggested changes do not address the underlying causes of these problems. Hypnosis can be induced by anyone with some knowledge or training of hypnosis or it can be self induced.
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis with the deliberate goal of going beyond relaxation to promote health and healing. Hypnotherapy is an effective way to access the subconscious mind in order to bring conscious awareness on ways to change unwanted habits and behaviors and develop insight regarding the root of one’s problems. During hypnotherapy, the past, present, and future may be addressed. The use of suggestion is often utilized to overcome certain issues. It is often conducted by an individual trained in hypnosis who also has obtained advanced education. It is most ideal to engage in hypnotherapy with a Masters Level (MSW, LCSW) or Doctoral level (PhD, PsyD) practitioner due to the possibility that issues may arise out of hypnosis that a trained professional could better address.
